007 Slept here (Saturday / Sunday Tour)
Saturday
Your weekend of intrigue starts with a visit to Veterans Point Gardens war memorial. Dedicated to the HMS Ajax, the Royal Navy ship after which the Town was named, these gardens also honour the Defence Industries Limited (DIL) plant and its workers who lived in the area during World War II.
Your exploration continues at Intrepid Park, site of the secret training facility Camp-X, bordering Whitby and Oshawa. Be sure to plan your visit to coincide with one of the schedule tours conducted by the author of ‘Inside Camp-X’. Tours are scheduled for the 4th Saturday of May thru August with additional tours offered on September 22 & 23 in conjunction with the Oshawa Doors Open event.
Did you know that Ian Fleming, creator of James Bond (007) trained at Camp-X!
Heading north on Stevenson Road will take you to the South Field of Oshawa Airport. Here you can drop into the Oshawa Military and Industrial Museum, home to the largest collection of running and otherwise operational military equipment in Canada.
Also located at the South Field of the airport is the Robert Stuart Aeronautical Collection. This private collection was gathered over 50 years and is now displayed inside two of the original WWII huts from the Oshawa #20 Elementary Flight Training School of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan.
Spend some time taking a relaxing stroll through downtown Oshawa and stop in at one of the local restaurants for dinner. With everything from gourmet fare to home-styled cooking, you’re sure to find something to suite your appetite.
Be sure to check out what’s happening at the General Motors Centre. Home to the Oshawa Generals, this venue also plays hosts to international performance artists.
After a busy day, book yourself into one of the local hotels to rest up – your adventure continues tomorrow.
